Conflict, family violence and poverty are just some of the issues that families can face. Often the issues can get overwhelming and it makes a big difference to receive some support.
We have trained and experienced family workers who can walk alongside you and your family to help you make positive, lasting changes.
Is your teenager struggling to keep up at school? Finding it hard to stay focused? Starting out at high school can create a lot of pressure for young people as they enter a new stage of their life.
Our trained Social Workers in Schools (SWiS) partner with you and the school to help your child thrive. They can also link you with other community networks and support.
How we can help
Social Workers in Schools support children in Years 1 to 8. Here are some of the things we can work on with you, your child and their school:
Social skills, self-esteem and confidence
Family or peer relationships
Behaviour issues
Family violence
Grief and loss
Advocacy
Referrals to other agencies
Where to start
Contact your nearest Family Works centre for more information or ask your school directly if a SWiS is available.
Teachers, principals or community members can refer children to SWiS
We are here to help Year 9 and 10 students re-engage with school life. Youth workers use the Check & Connect programme to mentor students for a minimum of two years. We provide this service in partnership with the Anglican Trust for Women and Children.
Our trained mentors help students:
Develop a positive attitude to learning
Increase their problem-solving abilities
Improve attendance
Set goals to raise their academic performance
Youth workers/mentors are available in:
Manurewa High School
James Cook High School
Papatoetoe High School
Tamaki College
Kelston Girls High School
Where to start:
Find out more from your school or one of our Family Works centres (please note we only have mentors in some Auckland areas).
The school nominates students for the programme
Students accepted into the programme are matched with a youth worker/ mentor
The mentor works with the student, school staff, the family/whānau and other services to provide comprehensive support
I used to run away. Now I share the problem.
Through my mentor I’ve been able to discover what I need at school to get into game design.
I wish you could see a ‘before’ and ‘after’ family photo.
